Turquoise Trail Audio CD Road Trip
Highway 14 is known as the Turquoise Trail because of the turquoise mined near Cerrillos for centuries, first by Indians long before the Europeans arrived, then by Spanish colonists, and later by Anglos on their way to Manifest Destiny. The Turquoise Trail CD enumerates the various trade routes used by Pueblo Indians to exchange goods with the great civilizations to the south in Mexico, the California coastal Indians to the west as well as other Natives in all directions.
The Turquoise Trail CD elucidates the history of the towns of Cerrillos, Madrid, Golden, and the East Mountain communities, illustrating their roles in the evolution of the road and the surrounding area.
Our artist explores the flora and fauna that thrive along the road. Our scientist examines the geology—the Garden of the Gods, the Cerrillos Hills, the Ortiz Mountains once full of coal, the Sandias that hang over Albuquerque and provide a ski area on their eastern slope, and the Jemez Mountain range in the distance to the west.
As the road passes near the Houser sculpture garden and foundry, our Indian expert explains the impact of Native American sculptor Alan Houser. The CD also discloses the reason so many movies and TV commercials have been made at Eaves Ranch near Lone Butte, listing many prominent movies filmed there.
The Turquoise Trail CD going south relates the legend of La Llorona , the legend that keeps every northern New Mexico child safe around streams, and on both CDs, our artist demystifies the role of Kokopelli—the hunchback flute player found at almost every petroglyph site.
