Albuquerque Volcanoes

It is not generally known, but New Mexico was once a very active site for volcanoes. In fact, there are more dormant volcanoes in New Mexico than all other states combined. Many of the small peaks that you see as you drive around central and southern New Mexico are actually ancient volcanoes. A short drive west of Albuquerque will take you to a trail head that meanders around some of these volcanoes.

If you are planning on hiking anywhere around the Albuquerque area, please remember to bring lots of water and appropriate shoes. Don’t let the seemingly gentle landscape fool you...it's very slippery, and a misstep could land you on a cactus!
