Due to the steep canyon walls, there is only one (secret!) way into the Embudo box.

Embudo River
For those not afraid of steep hike, the Embudo River Box is a little known gem in the heart of northern New Mexico. Flowing steeply through a narrow granite canyon from Penasco to Dixon, the Embudo (“Funnel” in Spanish) cascades from pool to pool for about 5 miles. A waterfall joins the river about 1 mile from the trail entry point. Some use the large rocks to sunbath and the large pools to swim while others pursue the aggressive wild brown trout.
