Pecos Scenic Byway

Highway 63 follows the Pecos River up into the heart of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The route is used frequently by local Santa Feans as a quick getaway for camping, fishing and hiking.

About two mile south of Pecos is the Pecos Historical Park where visitors can see one of the more important archeological pueblo remains. During its peak, the pueblo at Pecos contained more than 600 rooms and housed 2,000 residents in four or five story buildings.

As you follow the Pecos river, the road quickly narrows into a forested canyon. Numerous pullouts exist for the fisherman and picnicking facilities are maintained by the Department of Game and Fish. After every turn it seems the road is about to come to an end, but mile after mile it finds its way deeper into the canyon.
