Cabezon Peak

Cabezon peak is not a hike for the feint of heart. About 40 miles west of Bernalillo lies the inside remains of an ancient volcanic cone. This amazing geological feature jets up from the landscape, forming a pedestal about 500 feet above the Rio Puerco valley floor. Cabezon Peak is the largest of several volcanic necks in the area. The trail winds around from the east side to the west side, where rocks have been stacked into the shape of an arrow that points straight up the cliff face. At first you think “you must be kidding”, but closer inspection reveals a crack in the cliff wall. The trail takes you up the crack. At a few key points you are required to perform some basic rock-climbing techniques, where all for limbs are on the cliff face at once. For this reason, this hike is not for those unsure of their climbing abilities. A final scurry up some slippery gravel leads you to the top. A wind shelter has been erected from stones and a trail manifest has recorded the journey for past hikers. This hike is challenging but profoundly rewarding.
